L-Carnosine

Carnosine is a dipeptide of amino acids, beta-alanine and histidine. It is a naturally occurring peptide in the skin and body, with high concentrations in muscle and brain tissues. Research in several around the globe has shown that carnosine contains antioxidant properties that scavenge for reactive oxygen species (ROS) as well as neutralize alpha-beta unsaturated aldehydes that are formed from peroxidation of cell membrane fatty acids during oxidative stress. Studies have also demonstrated that carnosine can oppose glycation, most notably the formation of Advanced Glycation End (AGE) Products. This chronic glycolysis is suspected to accelerate aging of the skin as collagen proteins fuse with sugars to form AGE compounds that offer no structural benefit to the dermis but can't be broken down and replaced. Because of its ability to stop the formation of AGE compounds, carnosine has been proposed as a general anti-aging therapy by many researchers in the field of regenerative medicine. "L-Carnosine" refers to the chirally correct isomer of carnosine that the skin and body readily uses.
