Centella asiatica (more commonly known as Gotu Kola in culinary circles) is a small, herbaceous plant that is native to India and surrounding regions. Though unassuming in appearance, this diminutive plant is one of the centerpieces of Ayurvedic medicine and traditional healing treatments throughout Asia. It is classified as an adaptogen by herbalists, referring to its ability to increase the resistance of the body and individual cells to stress. It has been widely studied for its effects against bacterial/viral infections, its calming effects on inflammation, and its positive effects on circulation.
In skincare a bright spotlight has been on the extract of Centella Asiatica as possessing powerful antioxidant properties via its many active phytochemicals, most notably the compound asiatocide/asiaticoside. This active compound has also been demonstrated in clinical tests to penetrate deeply into the skin where it can stimulate collagen synthesis that in turn promotes skin tightening and a reduction of wrinkle depth visibility.
