Ferulic Acid
Ferulic Acid is an organic, phenolic compound that is abundant in plant cell walls. It is found in particularly high concentrations in seeds, such as brown rice, wheat, oats, peanuts, and coffee, as well as in fruits such as apples, artichokes, oranges, and pineapples. Laboratory studies suggest that ferulic acid may have positive effects against tumor development and several forms of cancer (by virtue of an apoptotic effect that leads cancer cells to self-destruct).
Like most phenols, ferulic acid has been shown in clinical studies to be a potent antioxidant against free radicals. Some research has shown that when combined with vitamin C the effective antioxidant potential for both ingredients is increased. In this manner it has also been shown to protect the skin against UV damage and has skin-lightening properties to gradually fade hyperpigmentation in the epidermis, such as freckles and "age spot," over time.
