Pink Grapefruit Extract (INCI: Citrus paradisi Fruit Extract)
The grapefruit tree is a subtropical plant that was first hybridized in the 1700's on the Barbados islands as a cross between a pomelo and a sweet orange. The fruit comes in white, pink, and red varieties, which refers to the internal color of their pulp and not the outer rind. The fruit of the grapefruit tree is high in several phytonutrients, including vitamin C, lycopene, several B vitamin forms, and various minerals.
In skincare formulations it is most often used for the aromatic essential oil that gives the extract its characteristic scent. Citrus scents are often described as lifting and energizing and used frequently in aromatherapy to enhance mood. These essential oils are also useful in the skin, where they have antibacterial and astringent properties. Some research also suggests that compounds in the extract of grapefruit may address wrinkles and sagging by improving skin elasticity and tightness.
Of particular interest is a compound in grapefruit called spermidine, which is a polyamine that is necessary for the growth of cells in humans (as well as other organisms). Several laboratory studies have shown that supplementing spermidine to test organisms significantly prolongs their lifespan. Though no tests have yet been done in higher animals or humans, there has been research done with human immune cells that were cultured in a medium containing spermidine that showed a significant extension of lifespan.
