Hydroxyproline (INCI: Dipalmitoyl Hydroxyproline)
Dipalmitoyl hydroxyproline is a natural hydroxyproline amino acid attached to a natural palmitic acid to both stabilize it for use in skincare formulations and to dramatically enhance its absorbability into the skin. Hydroxyproline is a natural amino acid that is a major component of collagen proteins and plays a key role in the stability of the collagen/elastin network in the skin. Specifically, hydroxyproline permits the distinct twisting structure of the collagen helix that gives it such strong stability and allows for a triple helix formation instead of just a double helix structure. Interestingly, hydroxyproline is found in very few places other than in skin's collagen, except for that it is also used by the other critical skin component, elastin. It is therefore an essential element for the skin to maintain the integrity of the collagen/elastin network that prevents wrinkle formation.
