Radish Root Ferment Extract (INCI: Raphanus sativus Ferment Extract)

The radish is a root vegetable that is related to the wasabi, horseradish, cabbage, and mustard plants in the Brassicaceae family. It is a native to Europe, having been cultivated at least since pre-Roman times, but is now grow throughout the world. Medicinally, the juice is often used as a cleanser, diuretic and a disinfectant, and in the treatment of several kidney-related ailments. Radishes contain sulfur based phytochemicals that can help regulate the flow and production of bile, which in turn helps in maintaining a healthy liver and gallbladder. It also possesses anti-congestive properties that are useful in treating certain respiratory conditions, such as asthma and bronchitis.

Nutritionally, radishes are a source of vitamin A, vitamin B2 (riboflavin), vitamin B3 (niacin), vitamin B5 (pantothenic acid), vitamin B6, vitamin C, riboflavin, folic acid, potassium, magnesium, copper, and calcium. In skincare formulas, it is these nutrients plus several other phytochemicals released during the fermentation process that are of particular interest. When radish roots are fermented there are certain peptides that are released which have antibacterial, antifungal, and general antimicrobial properties that are effective against acne development and help naturally preserve the formula from spoilage.
