Reishi Mushroom Extract (INCI: Ganoderma lucidum Extract)
The reishi mushroom, also known as the lingzhi mushroom (literally translated "supernatural mushroom"), actually refers to several species of fungus in the genus Ganoderma, though typically is the Ganoderma lucidum when referring to its use in Asian cuisine and medicine. It is a polypore mushroom that releases its spores through fine pores (instead of through underside gills like most mushrooms), and is soft, corky, and flat with a deep red cap. The reishi mushroom is revered throughout Asia as one of the oldest and most beneficial mushrooms for health, having been used in both food and medicine for thousands of years.
The extract of the reishi mushroom contains several beneficial compounds for human skin, particularly a group of triterpenes called ganoderic acids, which can stimulate hormone receptors in the skin. It also contains a wide spectrum of beneficial polysaccharides, such as beta-glucan, coumarin, mannitol, and various alkaloids. These compounds in the mushrooms have been found in studies to have anti-carcinogenic, anti-tumor, and immunotherapeutic effects. In fact, extracts of the reishi mushroom are already used in pharmaceuticals for treating cancer. Additionally, it has been found to inhibit platelet aggregation, lower blood pressure, cholesterol, and blood sugar. There is also evidence that the extract of the reishi mushroom may improve conditions of the liver, coronary disorders, diabetes, HIV/AIDS, and stress related conditions. |
